The “Cities Stockholm+50 High-Level Forum” on urban sustainability is held in Stockholm on 1–2 June 2022. Marking the 50th anniversary of the first UN world conference on the environment, the event takes place on the eve of the international environmental meeting Stockholm +50, which is held on 2–3 June 2022. Cities Stockholm+50 is attended by business leaders and mayors from all over the world. The programme will feature Mayor Juhana Vartiainen’s comments on sustainable urban planning.

At the beginning of his visit to Stockholm on 1 June, Mayor Juhana Vartiainen will meet the mayors of Nordic and Baltic capitals at a co-operation meeting. The topics of the meeting are related to the economy of the capitals in the context of the war in Ukraine and rising inflation, as well as the contribution to the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Cities Stockholm+50 puts cities at the centre of reducing emissions based on consumption. The aim is to strengthen collaboration among mayors and global business leaders, sending a clear market signal that cities have the capacity to change our consumption patterns. The forum will also review the progress towards the objectives of the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 in Glasgow last year and increase pressure on national governments to move from pledges to actions in order to improve the sustainability of global supply chains.

On the first day of the event, the programme will feature Mayor Vartiainen’s comments during a panel discussion on sustainable urban planning.

“Cities that are strongly committed to sustainable development, such as Helsinki, want to create better and better conditions for a smooth and good everyday life. Cities are increasingly the platforms for testing the most important solutions for a sustainable future in areas such as energy production, digitalisation and the development of city districts. This will further increase the importance of cities in solving various challenges,” Mayor Juhana Vartiainen says.

In connection with the visit, Finnish Ambassador Maimo
Henriksson and Mayor Vartiainen will arrange a dinner meeting for Swedish economic influencers at the Ambassador’s official residence.
