Construction will be postponed because the bids received by the City of Helsinki for the construction far exceeded the maximum price set for the project. A new, different kind of call for tenders is now underway.
In the 2025–2026 school year, the traffic education organised by the Traffic Town will continue in school and pre-primary education premises in the same fashion as in the current school year.
According to the updated schedule, Rastila Traffic Town will start operating in autumn 2026. The Traffic Town in Laakso is expected to reopen in 2028, after which Helsinki will have two Traffic Towns.
Camping site to remain open during construction
All the services of the Rastila camping site will continue to be available during the construction of Children’s Traffic Town from autumn 2025 onwards.
The Traffic Town at the Rastila camping site will be located in the western part of the caravan park, close to Rastila Beach and Vuotie. The Traffic Town will receive its own access route from the end of Karavaanikuja, which will not pass through the camping site.
Traffic Town visited by many generations
Children’s Traffic Town is an environment for learning about safe mobility that goes back a long way. In Laakso, the activities started in 1958.
The Traffic Town simulates Helsinki’s traffic, scaling it down into an inspiring learning environment suitable for children. The Traffic Town is a place where children can have fun and learn how to get around safely on foot, by bicycle or by pedal car. The traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and road signs are just like those in the real world, making it easy and fun to learn about them.
Children’s Traffic Town aims to further improve traffic safety for children and inspire children and families to adopt sustainable forms of transport.
