New Helsinki Outhouse serving users in Uutela

A new Helsinki Outhouse has been opened in the Uutela recreation area.

A new Helsinki Outhouse has been opened next to the Uutela hut (Uutelan kota) in Vuosaari. The hut and the new outhouse will serve the users of the recreation area.

“There are two units in the outhouse, one of which has childcare facilities. The Uutela hut's woodshed is also located in the same building," says project planner Elina Nummi.

The Helsinki Outhouse can be identified by the large heart that adorns the front panel of the green-roofed, timber-framed building. The building was designed by NRT Architects and built by Stara. The outhouse was built with OmaStadi funding.

Stylish dry toilets for popular recreational areas

The newly completed Helsinki Outhouse is only the second of its kind. With the new outhouse design, the city is building stylish dry toilets in popular recreational areas to improve its outdoor services.

The first Helsinki Outhouse was opened a year ago at Pornaistenniemi in Vanhakaupunki. "Even in the winter, we have had over 2,000 visitors a month, and in summer the number of visitors has doubled. The feedback on the blackboard inside the outhouse has been almost exclusively positive," says Elina Nummi.

The City of Helsinki is currently drafting a nature service policy, which will examine the current state of all recreational services and the need for improvements. The policy will also help in deciding the locations of future dry toilets.

The dung from Helsinki Outhouses is composted at HSY's Metsäpirtti composting field as a soil conditioner.
