Feast Helsinki offers a selection of over 100 food and drink-related events that give a comprehensive introduction to Helsinki's versatile and unique culinary scene. There is still time in the coming week, for example, to attend the Rhubarb Festival in the district of Herttoniemi, a Pizza Cruise in the Helsinki archipelago, and a Food Culture Tour on the famous fortress island of Suomenlinna. Or how about a Belgian Feast, spicy delicacies at the Indonesia-Finland Festival, or time travel at the historic Svenska Klubben restaurant?
And what would Helsinki Day, celebrated on June 12, be without the traditional rhubarb pie and coffee that is served at the mayor's morning reception at Helsinki City Hall? Helsinki's birthday will see a wide array of picnics and dinners being organized in different parts of the city, such as an Art Supper next to the round Ympyrätalo building in the district of Hakaniemi, and Dinner under the Malmi Sky in the Ala-Malmi Park in Helsinki’s northern district of Malmi.
“Feast Helsinki encourages Helsinki’s residents to take a culinary journey in their hometown! We have a great selection of top restaurants, cafes, microbreweries and roasteries. Now is also the perfect time to enjoy the tasty treats available at the city’s open-air summer terraces and on our islands and cruises,” says Sanna Forsström, the City of Helsinki’s Head of Brand and Events.
The events currently underway are part of the three-week-long Feast Helsinki food festival. Launched by the City of Helsinki to support the local restaurant, tourism and event industries, the festival also seeks to strengthen Helsinki's reputation as a food city. A ceremony to award the latest Nordic MICHELIN Star restaurants kicked off the festival in late May and brought Helsinki plenty of visibility at home and abroad. More than 120 chefs and restaurateurs from the Nordic countries were joined by more than 60 international and domestic media representatives at the unveiling, which was organized at Helsinki’s Savoy Theatre and City Hall.
Events to continue until the end of 2024
Many food and drink-related events are lined up to take place in Helsinki until the end of the year. Examples include the Tori Quarter’s Summer Terrace offering al fresco dining at the iconic Senate Square, which will be open until 25 August, along with the outdoor eating area at the Hietalahti Market Square, which will be open a bit longer, until 31 August.
On 13–17 August, restaurants in Helsinki will offer an appetizer and taste test lover’s extravaganza at its first-ever Pintxo Festival.
Later in the autumn, on 6–12 October, comes the time-honoured Baltic Herring Market, followed by the 24–27 October trade fair Wine and Food 2024 concurrent with On the Plate Fair for people with special diets. The annual Licorice Festival will be held in 26–27 October and a Helsinki Coffee Week will also take place in October.
