Startups at Helsinki’s Startup campus Maria 01 are making a significant positive impact when it comes to information sharing and strengthening society, according to a recent impact report. Last year, the companies that work at the Maria 01 campus raised EUR 358 million in funding and created 271 new jobs in Finland.

The leading Nordic startup hub Maria 01 has today 9 March 2022 announced its latest impact report, which takes a deeper dive into the net impact of the campus’s startups. The report used methodology developed by The Upright Project, a company that measures how companies impact the environment, people’s health, our society, and distribution of knowledge.

The results show that Maria 01 startups have had a consistent net positive impact in each of these areas. In terms of their impact on society, many Maria 01 startups have played a role in the value chains of essential part of our societal infrastructure, such as payment systems, energy, and transport – in addition to creating jobs and taxable income.

“As far as we know, we are the only startup hub in Europe that has systematically and consistently measured the impact of our startups. As we look to expand the campus to over 70,000 square meters, it becomes even more important to ensure that the companies that inhabit our premises are contributing to solving the world’s problems, not making them worse,” says Ville Simola, Maria 01 CEO.

In addition to their positive impact, Maria 01 startups are successfully raising significant funding rounds, making many of them successful in their core businesses. In 2021, Maria 01 members raised 358 million euros in 59 funding rounds, in addition to creating 271 new jobs. Maria 01 now has 65 different nationalities on their campus, which is an indication of the readiness of the startup ecosystem to hire people from a variety of different backgrounds and countries.

Maria 01 is the leading startup campus in the Nordics. The community brings together early-stage tech startups, recognized venture capital firms and international investors, startup ecosystem organizations, and large enterprises with a strong foothold in the tech community. Maria 01 operates as a community-driven, not-for-profit organization, co-owned by the City of Helsinki, Startup Foundation, and Helsinki Enterprise Agency. Currently, the campus is home to over 1,400 members, including 180 startups, 23 partner companies, and 22 local and foreign investor network members.
