The criteria for the 2024 Helsinki Cultural Act Award state that the winning act transforms or challenges existing urban space or practices, or offers a new perspective. It can be a small or large cultural act that demonstrates the courage to create something new and different. The recipient can be either a community or an individual.
The Culture and Library Sub-committee of the City of Helsinki Culture and Leisure Committee will make the decision on the award recipient in December, but the voices of Helsinki residents will also be heard in the selection process. Residents can submit their suggestions for the cultural act of the year from 29 October to 12 November 2024 via an online form. We encourage you to give reasons for your suggestion.
The award recipient will be announced in January at a public event open to all residents, and the exact date and location will be announced later. The prize to be awarded at the event is €5,000. In addition to the monetary prize, one or two honourable mentions may also be awarded at the event.
The very first Helsinki Cultural Act Award was granted to the Suvilahti graffiti wall in 2009. Last year, the award went to the children’s cultural information project Pienten Helsinki. Honourable mentions were given to the children’s cultural operator Skidit-kollektiivi and the artist Markku Puustinen, known for his site-specific installations.
