Come and experience the third and final work of spatial art combining sound and light in Kruunuvuorenranta’s old oil tank, Silo 468, from Friday to Sunday 7–9 October 2022 from 17:00 to 22:00. In the work, a virtual flock of birds is released inside the silo. This year, you can also take the ferry from the Market Square to the oil silo.
Pause for a moment and taste the stardust. Paint in your mind’s eye the most beautiful flock of birds and see how it looks and sounds. Where did they come from and where does the flock go from here?
Silo 468 in Kruunuvuorenranta will house the spatial work of art Ipnos – lintujen kuiske (Ipnos – whisper of birds) for three days from 7 to 9 October. The work can be experienced every day from 17:00 to 22:00.
The birds are released by sound and light towards the embrace of the urban sky in a dream world built into an old oil silo, where the laws of physics differ from the outside world.
Ipnos is the finale of the Siilo soi (Silo sings) trilogy, which has brought not only light but also sound to the Silo 468 landscape work in Kruunuvuorenranta in two previous autumns. The series originated from the pandemic-driven need to bring art outdoors to be enjoyed safely.
10 years of Silo 468 and Kruunuvuorenranta
Ipnos is also a celebration of the 10th anniversary of Silo 468, which was originally created in 2012 to mark Helsinki’s year as the World Design Capital. From the start, the lights of the work have symbolised a flock of birds changing direction with the wind.
The Kruunuvuorenranta district has also undergone a major transformation over the past decade. More than 5,000 people have already found a home in the district that sprung up from nothing, and the construction of the first rails for the Kruunusillat tramway began earlier this year. In the next ten years, the district will be completed and more closely connected to the city centre when rail transport begins in 2027.
