Helsinki Region Environmental Services HSY has planned a significant water supply renovation and development project for Pohjoisesplanadi and Eteläesplanadi and the surrounding streets. The area’s water supply networks have mainly been built at the beginning of the 20th century, some even at the end of the 19th century, and they are in need of renovation. In connection with the renovation, the aim is to separate the area’s mixed sewerage by constructing separate wastewater and stormwater sewers. The aim of the project is to improve the reliability of sewerage, reduce overflows to the sea and improve flood management in the area.
The construction of the project network is planned to be implemented in stages starting from the end of the 2020s. Before that, HSY will implement the Esplanade sewer tunnel, which will start at the Esplanade Park and connect to Mäntymäki sewer tunnel under Fredrikinkatu. The construction of the sewer tunnel is estimated to have minor above ground impacts. You can read more about the project on HSY’s website (in Finnish)(Link leads to external service) .
Please respond to the map survey by 30 June.
The City of Helsinki is currently assessing what other repair and improvement needs there are in the street sections to be renovated. The aim is that the needs of all parties will be addressed during the same construction project. Needs will investigated with a map survey, in which structural, traffic and cityscape change needs can be marked. You can reply to the survey until 30 June 2024: Survey on street renovation and development needs in the Esplanade area(Link leads to external service).
The survey does not cover the Esplanade Park and the needs of the areas regarding experiences or seasonal vegetation and lighting. Another intention with the survey is that the respondents can comment on the situation compared to the normal situation with the street, i.e. not to the arrangements of the experimentation with Esplanade and Erottajankatu in 2023–2024.
The results of the survey will be used to determine the development needs of the streets in the area in addition to expert assessments. The actual street planning and the related interaction are estimated to be launched in 2026 for the area’s streets to be renovated or otherwise developed.
