The renovation and expansion of the Pihkapuisto primary school and the Kaunokki daycare centre will be decided in the coming weeks

A renovation and expansion are planned for the Pihkapuisto primary school and Kaunokki daycare centre building (Pihkatie 11). The planning has progressed, and the project plan is nearing completion and will be presented to decision-makers in the coming weeks. The project plan is, in practice, a decision on the implementation of the project.

The current premises of the Pihkapuisto primary school and the Kaunokki daycare centre are insufficient for the growing number of users and do not fully meet the operational objectives. The building is designed for 112 daycare centre children and 322 basic education learners.

Structural and technical building repairs will be carried out in the existing building during the renovation. At the same time, a one-storey daycare centre section will be demolished from the old building and replaced with a new two-storey extension. Special education classes and teaching facilities will be located in the preserved part. A new educational block and the daycare centre will be located in the new part. The new kitchen and dining room will be located on the first floor of the new section. The project plan includes a more detailed description of the contents of the construction project.

The Urban Environment Committee’s Buildings and Public Areas Sub-committee is expected to process the project plan on 14 November. The plan will also require approval from the City Board and City Council. In practice, approval of the project plan is a decision on the implementation of the project.

The project plan will be published on the City of Helsinki’s website (hel.fi) on the sub-committee’s site(Link leads to external service) before the Buildings and Public Areas Sub-committee’s meeting.

Construction is expected to start in January 2026

According to current estimates, construction will begin in early 2026. If this schedule is accurate, the new premises are expected to be completed in the summer of 2027. The timetable will be specified when  a provider has been selected and a building permit has been obtained.

The existing operations will be moved to a temporary facility for the duration of the construction. The temporary facility is located in Malminkartano’s temporary facility at Arentikuja 3.
