Trees cut down in the Landbo and Karhusaari areas for safety reasons

The City of Helsinki will cut down trees that are in poor condition or that are otherwise hazardous in the Landbo and Karhusaari areas.

We will carry out the work by recreational routes and plot boundaries where trees that are hazardous or may fall suddenly pose a danger to residents and passers-by. For safety reasons, we will also thin out small trees at the junctions of routes and streets, in particular, where the view being blocked may result in dangerous situations.

If necessary, we will also thin out small trees at plot boundaries. If a housing company or plot owner so wishes, we can also remove trees that have spread onto the plot from a City-owned public street or park and cause a disturbance.

Most of the trunks cut down will remain on the ground as decaying wood. Varying levels of decaying wood support biodiversity in urban nature.

Bird nesting season will be taken into consideration

The affected area covers the district of Landbo and Karhusaari island. The work is not based on the nature maintenance plan; instead, the measures carried out seek to improve the safety of plots and recreational routes.

The City will start the work in spring 2025. We will pay attention to the bird nesting season in April–July when planning the work. We will not carry out work in important bird areas during this time.

The work is purchased by the Urban Environment Division of the City of Helsinki. City of Helsinki construction services (Stara) are responsible for the implementation.
