More greenery for streets and squares in the inner city – we need your input

Helsinki is adding more greenery in four areas of the inner city by transforming existing paved areas and parking spaces into planting zones. We are seeking input and local knowledge from residents to assist in the planning process.

The locations are Meritullintori in Kruununhaka, Neljäs linja in Kallio, the square at the intersection of Karjalankatu and Porvoonkatu in Alppiharju, and the park area adjacent to Lemunkuja in Vallila. Some of these locations were selected based on proposals submitted by residents through the OmaStadi co-creation initiative.

We are planning to increase the number of trees and various plantings in the existing street and park areas in the inner city. We would like to hear residents’ opinions on the plans. For example, are there enough benches and spaces for hanging out? What are your thoughts on the plantings? The survey is open from 21 August to 10 September 2024 in the Voice You Opinion service(Link leads to external service) (available in Finnish and Swedish).

The changes aim to make these locations greener and more pleasant, while also improving stormwater management, enhancing tree growth conditions and increasing opportunities for hanging out. These measures also support the city’s strategic goal of increasing street greenery. Additionally, they respond to residents’ requests for more greenery in the streets.

The plans will be completed by the end of 2024, and construction will begin in 2025.
