Fifth COVID-19 vaccine doses now being offered to severely immunocompromised persons

The City of Helsinki is now offering fifth COVID-19 vaccine doses to severely immunocompromised persons. The vaccine can be administered at a vaccination point without appointment 4–6 months after the fourth dose.

“Severely immunocompromised persons are at particularly high risk of contracting COVID-19, especially if they have a condition or are on medication that decreases their vaccine response. Because of this, it is important to boost the vaccine protection of this group,” states Medical Director Timo Carpén. 

Severely immunocompromised

Severely immunocompromised persons are those with the following disease or condition:

  • Organ transplant
  • Stem cell transplantation
  • Severe to moderate congenital immunodeficiency
  • Immunosuppressive cancer treatment
  • Treatment of autoimmune diseases with immunosuppressive biologics or JAK inhibitors
  • Dialysis and severe chronic renal failure
  • Advanced or untreated HIV
  • Other severe immunosuppressive conditions as evaluated by a doctor

The vaccine can be obtained by showing an ID or Kela card

The vaccine can be obtained by showing an ID or Kela card. Please be prepared to prove that you are severely immunocompromised upon request at the vaccination point with a copy of your medical records or an extract from the My Kanta service.

Persons who have recovered from COVID-19 do not need a fifth vaccine dose for now

A fifth COVID-19 vaccine dose is not currently being administered to severely immunocompromised persons who have received four COVID-19 vaccine doses and recovered from COVID-19. A severely immunocompromised person who has received three vaccine doses and recovered from COVID-19 can receive a fourth vaccine dose 4–6 months after recovery.
