Stay cool and safe – take care of your health in hot weather

Here are some tips on how you can take care of your health during a heat wave.

  1. Keep windows, blinds and curtains closed during the day. Open the windows only in the evening or at night to let the breeze in.
  2. If you are using an air conditioner to bring the temperature down, keep all windows and doors closed while the air conditioner is on. A fan can be helpful when the indoor temperature is under 35°C. Do not use a fan at higher temperatures – it will blow hot air, adding to the heat stress and increasing dehydration. Remember to drink enough water to stay hydrated.
  3. Avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day. If you have to go outside, stay in the shade.
  4. Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Eating cold and water-rich foods such as salads and fruits can also help you stay hydrated.
  5. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics such as linen or cotton. Protect yourself from the sun by covering up with clothing, a hat and sunglasses. You can also cool yourself down by taking a cool shower.
  6. Keep an eye on yourself and those close to you, especially if you have any long-term health conditions, for signs of heat-related problems. Seek medical assistance if the symptoms persist or get worse.
  7. Store medication at temperatures below 25°C. Check the packaging for specific storage instructions.
