Kallio summer streets to feature events stage

This summer, the Kallio summer streets project will bring the events stage that gained popularity in recent years in summer streets and parks in the city centre to Karhupuisto park. The summer streets events stage is a free-of-charge outdoor space for holding various events. The event stage will be made available to the public on Friday 16 May. The stage will serve as the venue for the popular urban barn dances (Katulavatanssit) and performing art by the University of the Arts Helsinki.

Welcome to the summer streets’ urban barn dances!

‘Katulavatanssit,’ or urban barn dances, are shared dancing events for all who want to skip through musical landscapes. The urban barn dances are part of the concept of the summer streets’ events stage. A total of four dance events will be held on the Kallio summer streets’ events stage over the summer on the first Saturday of each month from 15.00 to 18.00. The events are open to all and free of charge. The event will be organised jointly by the City of Helsinki and Lauri Jäntti.

Urban barn dances are based on improvisation, meaning that the only principles guiding the activities are being aware of the situation, respecting the boundaries of others and general hospitality among the participants. In this framework, any style and way of participating and physical movement is welcome: nothing is too much or too little.

The music varies from Argentinian tango to blues, from salsa to opera and from Finnish dance music to evergreen musical hits and everything in between.

University of the Arts programme brings performing arts to the stage

University of the Arts Student Union (TaiYo) arranged an open call in autumn 2024 for student projects for the ‘Vapaan taiteen tila’ pop-up programming in the Kallio summer streets in summer 2025. The purpose of the programme entity is to offer space for small and less polished performance concepts by students.

The programme is compiled especially for the summer streets, and it is curated by the board of the University of the Arts Student Union. The performances last for 15–60 minutes, and the shows are performed in the early evenings in the week beginning on 28 July. Further details on the events and their schedule are available on the  Kallio summer streets website.

A total of four performing arts shows will be performed on the summer streets. The performances vary from dance performances reflecting on their surroundings to bands playing folk music, a street theatre performance tailored to Kallio summer streets and an open-minded combination of jazz and soft rock influences.
