Katri Vala’s park will be renovated – aim is more pleasant and peaceful park

Katri Vala’s park in Sörnäinen will be renovated. The work will begin in mid-October with preparations and continue in spring 2025, when a new playground will be built at the upper deck of the park and a versatile outdoor sports area in the lower part. In addition, the park furniture will be replaced and two new maples and a new flowering planting area will be planted.

The park to be renovated will receive two major improvements: a playground and an outdoor exercise area. In addition, all park benches and furniture will be replaced. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of the park. At present, the park is perceived as restless – the changes are intended to increase the number of families with children and sports enthusiasts in the park.

The existing playground and exercise point will be removed from the area. The playground on the lower deck will be replaced by a versatile outdoor exercise area. The new playground will be built on the upper deck of the park, next to the current sandy field and in place of the old chess area. The park’s playing field will be maintained and it will still be possible to play a variety of games there.

A new playground will be built on the upper deck of the park. The highlight of the playground will be a large spiral climbing net. The climbing frame will replace the current chess board squares. Curved benches will be placed around the climbing frame.

The other playground equipment will be placed at the end of the current sandy field. The new play area will have swings, ground trampolines, a climbing track and trick bars.

Versatile outdoor exercise area and new plantings

A new and versatile outdoor exercise area will be built on the lower deck of the park. At the same time, existing play equipment and sports equipment will be removed. There will be a ping-pong table, exercise equipment for different muscle groups, a multifunction rack stand for body weight training, as well as a soft tatami for yoga, stretching and free training.

Two new maples will be added to the park. In connection with the outdoor exercise area, a new flowering planting area will be created, for which diverse perennials and magnolias have been planned.

Renovation will begin soon and be completed next autumn

The park’s renovation work will begin with the removal of playground equipment and furniture on the lower deck and the felling of the tree in poor condition on the upper deck in October 2024. The actual construction of the new park in the area will begin in spring 2025.

The work in the park is mainly done on weekdays from 7 am to 4 pm. Working areas in the park will be marked with construction site fences, and the work does not cause major disturbance. The park’s access routes will be closed according to the progress of the construction work.

Katri Vala’s park was founded in the 1930s. The contractor of the park renovation is the City of Helsinki’s Construction Services, municipal enterprise Stara.
