Maternity and child health clinics will offer NIPT screening to pregnant Helsinki residents starting in March

The test provides more detailed information about the most common chromosomal disorders in the foetus compared to the standard combined screening. The screening is voluntary and free of charge.

From 3 March 2025, maternity and child health clinics will offer non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)(Link leads to external service)

Clients will be informed about the possibility of NIPT screening during their first clinic visit. If your first visit to the maternity and child health clinic takes place before 3 March 2025, you will be offered the standard combined screening.

NIPT screening for foetal chromosomal abnormalities is conducted using a blood sample from the expectant client. For those for whom this test is not suitable, the option of combined screening will remain available.

NIPT screening for pregnant Helsinki residents will continue throughout 2025, after which the process will be evaluated towards the end of the year. The screenings are carried out by HUS.
