The school plot is located between a green and recreation area and detached houses, and the new building is designed to mesh with its surroundings.
The school break yard, which will be preserved partially in its natural state and unfenced, will form a natural continuation of the green area. The new school building is placed so that it will protect the school yard from noise and dust from the nearby Hämeenlinnanväylä. Vehicles will only be able to access the plot through its eastern section.
The school building will have two floors on the Runonlaulajantie side and three on the yard side. The school will have facilities for approximately 750 5th-9th grade students.
Pupils will enter the school through a green play yard. The Runonlaulajantie-side entrance will be accessible, leading to the second floor of the building. The shared heart space of the building, the administrative facilities and access to the stands of the gymnasium will be located by the main entrance. The majority of the teaching facilities and staff rooms will be on the well-lit second floor.
The ground floor will feature the woodwork, arts and crafts, home economics and music classrooms, as well as a gymnasium, a dining room and a kitchen. The third floor will feature classrooms for natural sciences and art, as well as pupil welfare facilities.
The building will utilise geothermal heat and solar panels and feature long-lasting natural materials, such as wood and bricks.
The new school building is a significant investment in teaching facilities in Kannelmäki. According to the project plan, the maximum price exclusive of VAT is €36,450,000 at the September 2023 price level. The total gross area of the building will be roughly 7,670 m².
The main designer is Architect Ilkka Salminen from Verstas Architects, and the main contractor is Varte Oy.
