Temporary facilities will be built on the former plot of Apollo Co-Ed School in Malminkartano

The construction of temporary facilities for the use of a daycare centre and two primary schools will begin at Malminkartano in the winter. The facilities will be built on the plot of the recently demolished Apollo Co-Ed School at Arentinpolku 1.

The goal is that the construction of the temporary facilities would begin in November–December 2024 and the facilities would be available for the autumn term 2025. The schedule will be specified when a building permit is obtained for the site.

Temporary facilities are needed as the facilities of schools and daycare centres are being renovated

The intention is to use the temporary facilities for five years. The facilities will be used first by Pihkapuisto Primary School and daycare centre Kaunokki (Pihkatie 11 / Tuohipolku 10) in autumn 2025. An extensive repair project will be carried out in their current facilities, in connection with which the part of the school in poor condition will be demolished and replaced by a new section.

Next, the facilities would be available to Malminkartano Primary School (Puustellintie 6) around autumn 2027. Malminkartano School will be converted into a school campus: an extension will be built for the school in connection with the renovation. In addition to the primary school, the campus will be home to the upper secondary school and lower secondary school of Apollo Co-Ed School as well as a preschool. Malminkartano Library will also have its own new building on the campus.

The Malminkartano area does not have ready-made facilities suitable for the needs of schools and daycare centres. Temporary facilities will be built by Parmaco Oy, from which the city will rent them for its use.

The new building will have two floors

According to plans, the facilities will be temporarily located in the western part of the plot formerly used by Apollo School (Arentipolku 1). The temporary pavilion will have two floors, as well as separate yards for the school and daycare centre. The facilities are well suited for teaching and early childhood education, and will be made healthy and safe. At its best, the facilities can accommodate a total of 412 schoolchildren and children in pre-primary education.
