The city purchased the building on March 24 and will start the actual construction work in late 2025. Light demolition work will begin indoors in April 2025.
The project is necessary and urgent. The Itäkeskus Family Centre and Itis Symppis have fixed-term facilities. The current leased premises of the Itäkatu Family Centre at Itäkatu 11 are in poor condition and are not ideal for the facility needs of the services. Symppis, on the other hand, can only operate in its current temporary facilities until April 2026.
The entrance to the Family Centre will be on the Tallinnanaukio side. The Symppis facilities will have a separate entrance one floor below, on the Turunlinnantie side. The customer premises of the services will not be connected to each other.
According to the preliminary schedule, the project plan will be submitted to the decision-makers for approval as follows: first to the user councils in April 2025, then to the Buildings and Public Areas Sub-committee in May 2025, and finally to the City Board and City Council. The decision on approving the plan will be made by the City Council.
The scope of the project is roughly 6,055 m² of gross area, and the estimated cost of purchasing and renovating the building is roughly € 25,000,000 at the June 2024 cost level. The price of the renovation project will be specified further in the project planning phase.
