New premises are planned for the Itäkatu family centre in Tallinnanaukio – Symppis Itäkeskus would receive premises from the Turunlinnantie side

The City of Helsinki is planning new premises for the Itäkatu family centre and Symppis Itäkeskus in the office building at Turunlinnantie 12 in Tallinnanaukio. The services would be located on different floors with access from different side of the building. There would be access to the family centre from the Tallinnanaukio side and to Symppis Itäkeskus from the street level on the Turunlinnantie side. The customer areas of the services would not be connected to each other.

The Urban Environment Division has studied different options for the permanent premises of the family centre and Symppis. Of the various solutions, the Turunlinnantie property has proven to be the best, where the services can be safely placed in their own facilities along good transport connections. Symppis Itäkeskus has been looking for permanent premises for a long time.

Accessible and safe facilities repaired for services

The city intends to renovate the building at Turunlinnantie 12 so that both services are guaranteed healthy, safe and accessible facilities. Symppis would be located on the bottom floor of the building and the family centre on the top five floors. Customers cannot access the premises of another service inside the building.

The number of customers of Symppis has decreased due to the current, too remote, location. Therefore, Symppis will be moved to the immediate vicinity of public transport connections. The current Kajaaninlinnantie location of Symppis was originally planned for a fixed period of time. Unlike currently, there are no apartments, daycare centre or school in the immediate vicinity of the premises  now being acquired. Before moving to Kajaaninlinnantie, Symppis operated at Turunlinnantie 14A.

The services of the family centre and Symppis are statutory, and Helsinki must provide the service. In Eastern Helsinki, there is a need to find new permanent premises for both the services.

Decisions to be made about the renovation project and the acquisition of premises

The Buildings and Public Areas Sub-committee of the Urban Environment Committee  will discuss the preliminary project plan for the Turunlinnantie 12 property at its meeting on 28 November. After that, the matter will proceed to the City Board and City Council.  If the preliminary project plan is approved, the city will purchase the building. A more detailed project plan is expected to be decided in early summer 2025.

According to the preliminary schedule, Symppis’ operations at Turunlinnantie 12 would begin in summer 2026. The family centre would move to the new premises later, as its lease agreement in the current premises will expire in March 2027.

The estimated maximum non-VAT price of the family centre to be implemented at Turunlinnantie 12 and the Symppis project will be approximately EUR 25,000,000. It also includes the cost of acquiring the building. The scope of the project is approximately 6055 gross square metres.
