A dental assistant viewed health information for no reason

It turned out in the City of Helsinki’s oral health care at the end of October 2024 that a dental assistant had viewed their colleagues’ personal and health information without a justified reason.

The data breach was detected when an another employee requested their own log data. Personal log data indicates who has processed the data of the person concerned in client and patient information systems.

When the matter was investigated in more detail, it turned out that the dental assistant had also viewed the data of other persons without permission.

The exact scope of the data breach is not yet known. The client and patient information in Helsinki’s dental care services is currently being reviewed. According to current information, at least 100 people have been the subject to the data breach. 

The data breach will be carefully investigated

The investigation of the data breach was started immediately after it was detected.

The matter will be handled in accordance with the City of Helsinki’s data breach policy. The supervisor has initiated the necessary measures related to the employment relationship with the employee who committed the data breach. The employee no longer works for the City of Helsinki.

The City of Helsinki has reported the data breach to the Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman and made a request for investigation to the police. 

The parties concerned will be informed of the data breach

The City of Helsinki’s dental care services will send a notification of the data breach to the affected persons. The notification also informs the parties concerned of where they can get additional information and support, if necessary.
