“I’m happy that Helsinkians now get the TBE and tetanus vaccines easily from the vaccination points. It’s good to keep also these vaccines up to date”, says Timo Lukkarinen, Medical Director of Health Stations.

TBE vaccines requires prescription

The prescription is requested at the own health station, e.g. by sending a message in the Maisa service. After this the vaccine is purchased from a pharmacy and brought to the vaccination point.

The TBE vaccine provides protection against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), an infection spread by tick bites. The TBE-vaccine does not protect against ticks. The most common disease spread by ticks is borreliosis. There is no vaccine against this. A vaccinated person should still protect themselves against ticks.

THL recommends the TBE vaccine for people who spend longer times in the nature (över 4 veckor), also in certain areas in Helsinki. These areas are Southern Laajasalo, Jollas/Villinki, Kivinokka and Roihuvuori.

You should keep your tetanus vaccination up to date

You can get the vaccination without a prescription at the vaccination points. You don’t need to get the vaccine from a pharmacy. The vaccination is free of charge for customers.

Children get their tetanus vaccinations at their maternity and child health clinic and school. Adults need a booster vaccine at the ages of 25, 45 and 65. People who are older than that will get the booster vaccine every 10 years. Tetanus can be contracted through a deep puncture wound, for example.
