Hernesaari is planned to be an area of dense urban structure, where the primary modes of traffic are walking, cycling and rail transit. A large part of everyday services are close by or easily accessible by public transport.

Hernesaari will be developed into an attractive area for maritime tourism and leisure services. A seashore park with a beach, local sports services and a water sports centre is planned as an extension of Merisatama on the eastern shore of Hernesaari. Boat maintenance and a snow collection area are planned in connection with the marina. A guest marina will be located on the eastern shore of Hernesaari.

The tram connection and bike paths run through the middle of the area on Laivakatu. The street divides the area into the residential east side and the western business side. Heavy traffic is directed to the western edge of the area to Munkkisaarenlaituri. Commercial services are concentrated in the northern part of Hernesaari.

The current buildings on Hernesaari will be demolished, with the exception of the Ford factory building, the Munkkisaari industrial building, the State Grain Storage, Löyly and Cafe Birgitta.
