Construction of the new Malmi Hospital is set to begin in 2029.
The project in brief
In the future, Malmi will be the second site of Helsinki Hospital. According to the 2030 hospital district vision for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, the operations of the Helsinki Hospital will be divided between the Malmi and Meilahti–Laakso districts in the future.
The planning phase of the new Malmi Hospital will last until approximately 2028. The construction phase is planned to begin in 2029, and the premises are expected to be ready for use in 2032.
Architectural competition
The City of Helsinki organised an architectural competition for the design of the new Malmi Hospital. The architectural competition was held as a two-stage invitational competition.
The competition seeked fresh solutions for hospital design. The main goal of the competition is to design a good public space and a healing environment.
12 architect groups were selected for the first stage of the competition, five of whom reached the second stage. The winner of the competition was Architect Group Reino Koivula Oy and Harris Kjisik Arkkitehdit Oy with their proposal, Puutarhat. Other prizes went to these proposals: Malmikko and Kylässä. In addition, the jury decided to award honourable mentions to Salvos and Verso.
Construction schedule
The aim is to begin construction in 2029. The building and its surroundings are intended to be completed and operations to begin in 2032.
