The Western Boulevard City covers an area of four kilometres, which starts from Huopalahdentie at the southern end of Munkkiniemi and continues through the Haaga roundabout to Vihdintie. The Boulevard City will complement the existing city in Munkkiniemi, Niemenmäki, Munkkivuori, Länsi-Haaga and Pitäjänmäki. In the future, the Western Boulevard City will welcome around 14,000 new residents, new services and improved transport connections. The planned West-Helsinki Light Rail, the newly completed Light Rail line 15, and the existing rail network will offer a quick and sustainable way to get around the area.

Estimated schedule

The detailed planning of the Boulevard City has started and will continue by area during the 2020s. Residents in the areas will be informed of the start of the changes to the detailed plans, and interaction with concerned parties will take place in connection with the changes.

Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie

Huopalahdentie and Vihdintie will become urban boulevards in the future. They will be easy to walk or cycle along and will provide two lanes for cars in each direction. A new high-quality cycling path will connect the area to Huopalahti station.

In 2023, Light Rail line 15 started operating, and its route runs through the Haaga roundabout. Line 15 improves crosstown traffic from Keilaniemi in Espoo to Itäkeskus in Helsinki and also serves the residents of the Western Boulevard City. The planned West-Helsinki Light Rail will run through the area from south to north.

Services

The aim of the planning of the Western Boulevard City is to create a dense inner city-like urban structure with street-side facilities and services. Once the land use of the Boulevard City has been fully implemented, the need for new schools and daycare centres will also increase. The area’s new and existing school and daycare facilities will be examined as the planning of the Boulevard City progresses.

Haaga Family Centre and Health and Well-being Centre are being planned for the area of the current Haaga roundabout.

The family centre will bring together services for children and families at a single service point.

The health and well-being centre will be a service complex that will bring together health and social services mainly for the adult population.

Climate-smartness and energy efficiency

The aim of the planning of the Boulevard City is to be at the forefront of the development of climate-smartness in urban planning.

Some of the planned blocks on the boulevard will be located in an area that is currently covered by trees. This premise reinforces the need to ensure green efficiency and stormwater management in built-up areas. The functionality of future green areas will be carefully planned in terms of both recreation and biodiversity. It will be possible to live in a climate-smart way in the Western Boulevard City thanks to the new light rail and local services along the boulevard.
