Sigurd Frosterus Park will be built in Taivallahti near the Hietaranta beach. A pedestrian route will go around the park, featuring benches, a barbecue spot, play equipment and an exercise station. The end of the Taivallahti bay will feature the brick-paved and terrace-like Martta Ypyä Square, while an accessible observation platform will be designed for the tip of the peninsula.
The current Hietaranta beach will be expanded close to the park, and a lawn area suitable for spending leisure time in the summer will be opened by the beach. The shore can be reached accessibly via a wood-surfaced route built on the beach.
The park will feature species thriving in marine conditions and a natural atmosphere. Trees will be planted on the Merikannontie shore and Martta Ypyä Square in a way that enables flying squirrels to move through the area.
In addition to the park, a spa hotel is being planned for the area as a private project. The park area will be open to everyone and built around the spa hotel.
The mini golf course currently located in the area and the route going along the shore will be preserved in the new park. By contrast, the winter storage for boats and the dog pen will be decommissioned in accordance with the current detailed plan. A substitute dog park will be built in Sibelius Park in 2023–2024. The area is also served by the Rajasaari dog park, in which separate pens for small and large dogs are expected to be built in 2026.
The City of Helsinki’s Urban Environment Committee will discuss approving the park and street plan in December 2022. The plan is to begin the construction of the park in the spring of 2023, and the park will be completed in phases until 2029. Construction work on the changes to Hiekkarannantie will begin in 2023. Traffic arrangements will be slightly changed on Merikannontie.
- The current detailed plan entered into force in 2009. Planning work for Sigurd Frosterus Park began in early 2020.
- The first step was to create a general municipal infrastructure plan, which was needed for establishing the technical baseline information of the area. The history of the area and starting points for designing the park were also surveyed in the same work phase.
- The park and street plan drafts were published on the City’s website from 8 to 21 June 2022 and presented at an online resident event on 15 June 2022. You can watch a video recording of the event below.
- Before the park and street plan proposals were approved, they were put officially on display for two weeks on the City’s website in the autumn of 2022.
- The Urban Environment Committee will process proposals related to approving the park and street plan in December 2022.
- The preliminary plan is to build the park in phases from the spring of 2023 onwards. The schedule will be specified and confirmed in connection with the City’s annual budgeting process.
