UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra’s small ensembles tour Helsinki’s libraries for the first time

Jazz will be playing at Helsinki’s libraries from 24 to 26 September 2024 as Finland’s only professional orchestra specializing in jazz music, UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra, goes on a library tour with six small ensemble concerts around the city.

The small ensembles composed of UMO musicians, or UMO Helsinki Ensembles, perform at libraries in Kallio, Tapulikaupunki, Malmi, Rikhardinkatu and Herttoniemi as well as Central Library Oodi.

This is the first tour jointly organised by the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra and the Helsinki City Library. UMO has previously performed individual concerts at libraries – now, for the first time, the orchestra will enter Helsinki’s local libraries in the form of a full tour.

The concert programmes include a diverse selection of various genres and eras of jazz music. At the tour, you will get to hear, among other things, how trombonist Kasperi Sarikoski leads the listeners on a musical journey to New Orleans to the roots of jazz music, and trumpeter Mikko Pettinen introduces the audience to the romantic classics of jazz legend Chet Baker. The duration of the concerts varies from forty minutes to an hour, and they are free of charge.

The concerts are part of UMO’s audience work, which aims to promote and develop the accessibility of UMO’s concerts. The tour allows you to easily participate in high-quality jazz concerts at your local library.

“UMO’s small ensembles’ library concerts bring jazz music close and easily accessible to everyone, including those who may not be familiar with concert halls. The warm and inviting atmosphere at one’s local library creates a relaxed space where you can enjoy high-quality live music and the stories behind the music in the middle of everyday life. This is an important part of UMO’s extensive audience work, which enriches the cultural life of the city’s residents and offers an opportunity to experience jazz in a new way. The concerts make music truly accessible – everyone has the opportunity to step in and enjoy the art,” says Henriika Steidel-Luoto, General Manager, UMO.

“One important task of the library is to serve as a platform for various events. I believe that the city’s residents will be delighted with UMO’s library tour. A tour consisting of six libraries is a great start, and perhaps it will also serve as a prelude to future new tours in other libraries and neighbourhoods,” says Katri Vänttinen, Director of Library Services in Helsinki.
