The Konepaja area’s development between Aleksis Kiven katu and Teollisuuskatu is finished. Between 2007 and 2021, homes were built for about 2,500 residents, and thousands of jobs were created.
Konepaja’s attractive residential area also incorporates the historic old VR machine shop, which is being renovated into a lively event venue. We encourage materials and colours inspired by the railway’s history in the area’s construction. Bricks are frequently used as a construction material, and symbolic details such as the area’s gates are also recycled.
The area’s industrial heritage and the over 100-year-old buildings in the old machine shop area are also protected as part of the urban landscape. The buildings associated with railway history will be renovated for new uses. The area will have old and new buildings, which will make it visually rich.
Zones and plans
The detailed local plans determine an area’s land use. For example, it shows where we can build housing, offices and parks, or where the roads and other pathways are.
