Facade repairs to be performed in Malminkenttä terminal

The repairs to the facades of the Malminkenttä terminal building owned by the City of Helsinki will start on the entrance side. The repairs to secure the use of the building, which were started last summer, will be completed by early summer.

The facade of the terminal will be renovated in phases. Alterations to the first level will now be carried out on the entrance side.

The work will begin with demolition of the brick cladding added to the facade in the 1960s. The building is empty and the demolition will begin as soon as possible. The upcoming work on the facade is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Aiming to restore the former facade

The terminal building, which was completed in 1938, is protected in the detailed plan as a building with considerable value in terms of cityscape, architecture and history. The former facade will be restored during the repairs: granite cladding will be added to the base and the external surface will be plastered and painted. However, the new structure of the facade will differ from the original, because the original facade was unsuitable for the local conditions.

The experience gained from the repairs can be used to design the repairs of the other facade surfaces of the terminal.

Repair work started last summer is almost ready

Repairs started last summer will also be completed at the terminal by early summer. The goal of these repairs is to keep the building in working order.

The building will need more work even after these repairs, and an extensive basic improvement and the remaining facade repairs will need to be performed later. The timetable for these repairs is still undecided.

Terminal facilities to be offered for rent after repairs

The building contains a restaurant and rooms of different sizes suitable for office use. The restaurant has a cold storage room. Other devices and equipment must be provided by the new tenant.

The premises offered for rent will be posted in the oikotie.fi online portal later on, and a tender competition will be organised for the rental agreement for e.g. the restaurant.
