The development needs of the Market Square area relate to movement and connections in particular, to the placement of functions and the renewing of the technical systems of the Market Square. The starting points for the planning included the Market Space’s historical value, maritime feeling, significance as a central place for market trade and urban life, and the fact that it is located in the walking-oriented central Helsinki. When it comes to things such as the construction of the waterway transport terminal, the planning will also take into consideration the needs of the developing water transport. The work also aims to increase the opportunities for expanding and developing the market trade.
In accordance with the planning principles of the area, the planning has been advanced with experiments such as the reduction of the number of parking spaces in the market square and the utilisation of the Keisarinluoto stage in an almost car-free environment in summer 2020.
The next step in the zoning of the Market Square is the plan proposal.
