The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has given the City of Helsinki the right to use the domain name .helsinki. Currently, the City of Helsinki uses the address Hel.fi, while the address Helsinki.fi belongs to the University of Helsinki.
The new .helsinki root domain will allow for the City to have its name in its Internet addresses. The common .helsinki domain clarifies the identification of the City of Helsinki websites both domestically and abroad.
The new .helsinki addresses will be under the control of the City. The City can decide what kind of names it will use and who they will be assigned to.
