History as a villa area

A villa area was established in Kruunuvuori at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a summer retreat for wealthy city dwellers. Today, almost all the villas have disappeared. The last remaining Kruunuvuori villa, Villa Hällebo, was completely destroyed in an arson fire in 2021. However, Villa Idman, built by Johan Cygnaeus, still stands on Kaitalahdentie.

You can explore the history of the villa area through the information boards in the area.

Kruunuvuori cliffs and oil tank

Kruunuvuori cliffs rising to a height of 30 metres are a significant geological site and a scenically valuable rock area. From the cliffs, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kruunuvuorenselkä, stretching from Kulosaari to Hanasaari, Katajanokka, Suomenlinna and out to the open sea.

At the top of the cliffs stands an oil tank, a remnant of the Laajasalo oil port, which was Helsinki’s largest oil terminal in 1955. The port ceased operations in 2010. In addition to the great views, you can admire the delicate vegetation that thrives on these rugged cliffs.

Kruunuvuori Bridge

From the cliffs in the south-western part of Kruunuvuori, you can observe the construction progress of the Kruunuvuori Bridge. This bridge will create a new tram connection between the city centre and Laajasalo. The tram operations are estimated to start in 2027.

Kruunuvuorenlampi is a wilderness-like small pond, which are rare in Helsinki. The paludified pine forest and herb-rich hardwood-spruce swamp surrounding the pond are endangered habitats in Southern Finland. The pond and its surroundings serve as an important breeding site for frogs and Leucorrhinia dragonflies. From June to August, you can spot the striking white flowers of water lilies of the species Nymphaea candida floating on the pond’s surface. At dusk, Daubenton’s bats can be seen gliding above the calm water, hunting for caddisflies.

The nature of the pond and its surroundings is very fragile. Movement in the protected area is only permitted along marked routes on the map.
