A bird paradise in the centre of Helsinki
The waters of Vanhankaupunginlahti are an important habitat for both migratory birds and birds nesting in the area. Approximately 300 different bird species have been found in the bay area, more than a third of which are nesting species.
The nature of Vanhankaupunginlahti has been cared for in the long term. The area is home to many endangered or rare species of birds, insects, bats and polypores. There are also several nature reserves in the area. The largest of these is Viikki-Vanhankaupunginlahti.
There are several birdwatching spots in Vanhankaupunginlahti that are easy to reach by public transport. You can get to the Kivinokka birdwatching platform most conveniently from the Herttoniemi metro station. If you are going to Pornaistenniemi, you can get off at bus stops along the Viikintie road, for example. You can also reach the birdwatching towers of Keinumäki and Hakala, which are located near the Viikki arboretum, from Viikintie. Pack binoculars and good snacks and head out on a birdwatching trip!
